In the following months of the wars end the North had set some standard polices the Southern states must inherit in order to join the Union once more. These included things like paying back war debts and obvoiusly adopting the 13th Amendment and abolishing all slavery in the states. These were the starting polices that started the reconstruction the the United states. The North wanted the South to conform but the culture of the south was not yet acclimated to post slavery life. Following the civil war many rich Southerns still wanting slavery, causing things like riots, murders and homegrown terrorism. The African American population wanted to move forward and join the American way of life but it would take time for the majority of the South to allow them in. Once in the ex-slave population made an impact in politics, some 2000 African American held some sort of political office after the follow elections. Ex-slaves also impacted things like schooling and everyday life. These are just a few of the many pros and cons following the civil war and the reconstruction that followed. President Andrew Johnson set simple guidelines for the Southern states and these were very achievable once the South was ready to accept the defeat they were given.
